RUSSIANART + CULTURE: Enlightened Aida from Azerbaijan Yarat (meaning ‘create’ in Azeri) was founded in Baku in 2011 by Aida Mahmudova as a non-profit organization aiming to promote Azeri artists – including Aida herself. She was one of three artists showcased at the ViennaFair, with works capturing the flavour of Sovietsky, a run-down district of Baku. Aida interpreted the show’s theme, Poetics of the Ordinary, by evoking ‘the transience of this urban environment’ with a discarded, ornately carved wooden door that cast an imaginary stainless steel shadow across the floor. Her installation was reverentially granted a room unto itself – one the artist felt might have looked better with a ceiling and darker walls – and was complemented by eight videos by Orkhan Huseynov featuring Sovietsky inhabitants, and three giant street photos by Sanan Aleskerov.
