ARTIST STATEMENT

Timo Herbst
´s projects explore the choreography of everyday life and the meanings and consequences that bodily movements in space have for society as well as the private person. He works with various artistic materials, but he primarily uses drawing and videography as two different media to study time, space, and motion. For instance, to express movement in his drawings, he sketches his subjects on both sides of several sheets of paper, depicting multiple images of a particular object or body part as if it is moving in a stream of motion across the page. These drawings work like storyboards, but because of the complexity of the movements, the process depicted is not completely ascertainable; the motion remains opaque, and the representation diverges from a strict linear chronology. Additionally in his videos he re-contextualize the drawn actions and movements questioning how a meaning arises through a bodily movement. While every human gesture operates as a sign, in his works it becomes visible that it is not clear whether gestures generate one singular, bounded meaning or instead create distinct, heterogeneous meanings. The boundaries that distinguish two spaces and the intersections where those spaces overlap are especially important to his work because the ambiguity of gestures reveals itself most acutely at these points.
