The importance of Contemporary Art in Design Methodology

Igor Efrem Zanti, Art Curator and IED Venezia Director

Jacopo Manganiello, IED - International Marketing Manager

2 December 2015 / 19.30

The first step of design methodology is often identified as ‘Research’.

However, prior to that, there are some behaviours that the contemporary designers need to adopt if they want to add value to their projects. Essential for contemporary designers is to move among the various spheres of creativity and understand what is happening right now in the world of art, fashion, photography, design, advertising... this makes them more competitive and credible when communicating their design aim. By changing their attitude towards the complexity of contemporary world they can have an impact on the final result of their design process: be it a piece of furniture, a dress, an acessory, a strategy.

Also IED Istituto Europeo di Design 30 November 2015 presents ‘FRAMES’ IED Roma Fashion Show to the Azerbaijan Fashion Week 2015.

AFW hosts some of the outfits designed by Bachelor Senior students of the Undergraduate Degree in Fashion Design of IED Roma originally shown at David LaChapelle’s exhibition (i.e. “David LaChapelle, dopo il Diluvio”), in the elegant Palazzo delle Esposizioni in the heart of Rome. FRAMES blends the traditional rules of tailoring with the most innovative techniques, combining fashion, design and photography. Furthermore, along with a great experimentation of digital printing system, 3D processing and the use of technological issues on fabrics, FRAMES presented outfits and jewels characterized by a unique kind of “up-to-date craftsmanship”. The result was a unique fashion show, which “sewed together” accuracy, innovation, fun and precision, sense of lightness and sophisticated inspirations. Besides the deep research, which led to a unique idea, the original presentation itself contributed as well to make FRAMES an innovative project. Another remarkable element of this fashion show was also the focus on different creative visions, intertwined, blended and inspiring one another.

Lavinia Ciampa, Ivyhelix.

The collection presents a woman who plays with sophistication, elegance, and essentiality. Tulle layers, transparent and pastel colored fabrics create outfits with clear reference to Art Nouveau’s pictures.

Martina Biagini, American Made Preppy.

To understand the meaning of “Preppy” we have to go back to Fifties and Sixties and have a look at the uniforms worn by college students in the USA. An “Old-school atmosphere”, declined in a great variety of colors: pure white, burgundy, English green, ochre, sand, with tartan applications and prints inspired by the most exclusive American colleges’ logo.

Sara Cannatelli, Rebel twice.

The intimate reality of the superfluous unveils its naked soul. Strictness and simplicity are basic elements to develop a precise line with clear outlines An unruly soul forced in a stern outfit generates a brand new androgyny.  Women wear folk costumes resembling townspeople of the late post-war period. Women wear men’s clothes as well, in order to express their firmness and determination in being fully responsible of their future.

Flaminia Pietravalle, Neatness.

Neatness means clearness, accuracy, simplicity and strictness, all applied to an “ideal” which encompasses architecture, art and design. Reality and objects leave out the unnecessary and show their pure essence. Shapes are minimal and geometric, clear and linear. Transparency, overlays, patterns and motif reliefs inspired by  Joachim Bandau, Nubuhiro Nakanishi and Gianfranco Ferrè, with his unique white shirt.

Moreover and for the first time AFW and IED announce young designers contest in the following categories:
