SUAD GARAYEVA. LECTURE EMERGING MARKETS FOR ART OR HOW TO BUILD AN ART MARKET

15 Jul 15

YARAT Contemporary Art Space presents the lecture “Emerging Markets for art or how to build an Art Market” by Suad Garayeva, the Curatorial Director of YARAT Contemporary Art Centre and a former Specialist at Sotheby’s London July 15, 2015.

Art has been a status symbol and a valuable commodity over centuries. However, the recent boom in prices for art has positioned art as an important investment category. Nevertheless “art” differs dramatically from other, regularly traded commodities, as its market remains largely unregulated and its real value not easily quantified. Globalisation is fast abolishing borders, and new territories become increasingly more present on the international art scene. However, the strategies that underlie a successful development of a particular market are very important for sustainable and solid marketplace.

In this lecture, Suad Garayeva will talk about steps and considerations in creating an art market for new geographies. The lecture will look at both challenges and benefits of opening up to the global market, the role of the auction houses as key players in creating value, and strategies for developing pricing and branding in contemporary art. As a pioneer of new sales of Contemporary Art from the Caucasus and Central Asia, as well as the head of Russian and Eastern European Contemporary Art auctions at Sotheby’s, Suad will particularly focus on these areas as case studies in her talk.
