YARAT FILM CLUB: DENIZ USTER'S FILM 'BEYOND IS BEFORE' IN FRAME 3RD BAKU PUBLIC ART

YARAT Contemporary Art Space Film Club invites to the Deniz Uster's film screening on Open Air Cinema 'Beyond is before' 11 August 2015 in YAY Gallery. The screening will be organized as a part of in frame 3rd Baku Public Art Festival `A Drop Of Sky` curated by Sara Raza. 

A series of film screenings inspired by science fiction and futurism will run from July to August at YARAT Contemporary Art Centre’s auditorium and open air cinema on the rooftop of YAY Gallery.

Synopsis: 'Beyond is Before' was filmed in Nad Al Sheba-Dubai, envisioned in a post-apocalyptic future, whereby a freezing-cold Dubai from a concurrent past is excavated from beneath the sand: the story of a sole Pakistani survivor traveling with his pet kitten. There is neither water nor oil in this future. Fortuitously, a spongy plant with a pink hue grows under the desert sand, whose fluid can be used both for liquid sustenance and fuel. A fish-plant can also be extracted from the sand as a food supply.

Deniz Üster (b. 1981, Istanbul) has an undergraduate degree from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, an MA in Visual Arts and Communication Design from Sabanci University, and an MFA from The Glasgow School of Art, Scotland. In 2011 she was selected to represent Turkey for the Henkel Art Award, and nominated then shortlisted for the Sovereign European Art Prize. In 2012, she completed a three-month residency commissioned by Delfina Foundation, Art Dubai, Dubai Culture and Heritage, and Tashkeel. The following year, she undertook a film commission in Dubai by Farook Foundation and a three-month residency in Seoul, Korea, supported by a Glasgow Visual Artists Award, Arts Trust Scotland and Seoul Art Space Geumcheon. In 2014, Uster participated in a residency with her newborn daughter and husband in Cobh, Ireland supported by Turkish Cultural Foundation, SAHA and Sirius Art Centre. Uster has recently screened her latest film Beyond is Before at ICA, London preceded by her presentation on Islamic Futurisms, a collaborative manifesto, co-written with Gurcim Yilmaz. Currently, she is taking part in show entitled “Reunion” at the Sabanci Museum in Istanbul, which can be seen until the end of July 2015. Uster has exhibited internationally; in the UK, South Korea, UAE, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Hong Kong, Finland and Turkey. She currently lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland where she holds a studio at Glasgow Sculpture Studios.
