FILM CLUB: RUSSIAN FILMS WEEK

YARAT Contemporary Art Space presents films screening in frame Russian Films Week in Baku. 

There are 4 films: “Jumps” by Ivan Tverdovsky on September 11, “Uncle Sasha” by Alexander Gordon on September 12, “Blood” by Artyom Temnikov on September 13 and “Summer” by Kirill Serebrennikov on September 14. Screening will be shown at Painting Museum. 

And on 12 September in frame Russian Films Week you can join to the lecture by Ivan Tverdovsky, a Russian director, screifpwriter and artist. 


Jumps, 2018, Russia, Lithuania, Ireland, France, 95 min. Dir. Ivan Tverdovsky

The film tells the story of a young man who has a rare disease and had spent his entire life in a boarding school. Unexpectedly, his mother takes him home. In Moscow, the hero finds himself in the center of an organized criminal group.

Ivan I. Tverdovsky – director, screenwriter, cameraman and artist. In 2011, he graduated from VGIK (experimental directing studio under the direction of Alexey Uchitel). Since 2012, Tverdovski is curating the short film program in the framework forthe Moscow International Film Festival. Tverdovski is participant and laureate of numerous Russian and international film festivals, including the national award in the field of non-feature film "The Laurel branch", festivals "Message to mankind", "Russia", etc. Tverdovski came into the spotlight after his first feature film "Class correction", which premiered in 2014, at the Kinotavr Film Festival in Sochi. The film received the prize of the jury of distributors and the prize for the best debut. The film received the Grand Prize at the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary in the "East of the West" competition of Eastern European Film Festival. In 2015, Tverdovsky was already on the jury of the “To the East of the West" contest at the 50th anniversary International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, and a member of the jury of the short-film contest of the Kinotavr festival. In 2016, at the 27th Kinotavr Film Festival, he was awarded the prize of the Guild of Film Experts and Film Critics for his "Zoology" full-feature.

Uncle Sasha, 2018, Russia, 92 min. Dir. Aleksander Gordon

Almost Chekhov's story about a once successful film director, who is shooting his last film in his country house against all the odds. Strange guests, narcissistic actors, eccentric neighbors and the director himself offer rich ground for the author’s irony, and sarcasm. In addition, remember that Chekhov's gun always shoots in the end!

Alexander Gordon is an actor, director, producer and screenwriter. From 2001 to 2003, he hosted “Gordon show” on NTV. In 2002, he made his first feature film "Shepherd of his cows" written by his father Harry Gordon. The painting won the prize of the jury of the IX Russian Film Festival "Literature and Cinema" in the category of "Best Director's Debut". In March 2004, Gordon presented his production of "The Demons" based on the novel by F.M. Dostoevsky on the stage of "School of Modern Play". Since September 2004, Gordon is hosting the "Stress" show on NTV. From the beginning of October 2005, he is hosting the "Gordon 2030". Since 2008, Gordon is hosting the "Private preview" and "Gordon Quixote" shows on NTV.

Blood, 2018, Russia, 100 min. Director: Artem Temnikov

A modern parable about two brothers, who undertake a difficult spiritual quest towards each other, unfolds in the center of modern Moscow. Valera ROMEYEV is a young artist forced to work as a street portraitist. Having spent a serene childhood in a mining town in the East of Ukraine, Valera is struggling to find herself in a big cruel city. In the hope of support, Romeyev is looking for his elder brother Vadim - a successful businessman, who left his father's house and lost contact with his family long ago. Strong, independent Vadim, refuses to help his younger brother. Pushed into the corner by circumstances Valery decides to take a desperate step.

Artem Temnikov director, screenwriter. In 1998 he graduated from the KSPU (Kaluga State Pedagogical University). In 1993, he graduated from the film directing department of the Russian Institute for the Post-graduate Training of Cinematography Workers under the Russian Federation Committee on Cinematography. In 2006, Temnikov was granted membership in the Writers' Union of Russia. He wrote scripts and directed documentary films for TV and hosted several TV shows including "Around the World", "Russian Extreme”, “In Search of Adventures”, "Far and Farther" and others. Temnikov worked in hot spots, made dozens of TV programs and documentaries in more than 90 countries.

Summer, 2018, Russia, 126 min. Dir. Kirill Serebrennikov

The film tells about the very beginning of the creative path of Victor Tsoi and the “Cinema” band, Tsoi’s relationship with Mike Naumenko, his wife Natalia and those who were in the forefront of the 1981 Leningrad rock movement. This is a story about Leningrad in the 80's, about love, personal quest and great expectations - about the mood that will remain with us forever.

Kirill Serebrennikov is a director, screenwriter, artist, actor and producer. He was born on September 7, 1969 in Rostov-on-Don. In 1992 he graduated from the Faculty of Physics of Rostov-on-Don State University with a red diploma. Serebrennikov started theatre directing when he was a student: first in the amateur studio "69", and then moved on to the professional stage starting from 1990. The performances were repeatedly recognized as the best performances of the seasons and received multiple awards in the Festivals Since 1991, he started working on television. For seven years, he made about 100 commercials, 11 video clips, 2 documentaries, 4 TV performances, 1 video art work, 1 musical television movie, 3 multi-series projects. Since 1998, in the cinema, he made a television series. The first theatrical production "Plasticine" based on the play by V. Sigarev was presented in Moscow.  Serebrennikov is an artistic director (since 2012) and director (since 2015) of Gogol Center.
