Baku is a rapidly changing city with an ancient history, home to a growing contemporary art scene that is beginning to make its mark internationally. This panel will discuss the burgeoning new cultural center of Baku, offering insight into its remarkable history and the dynamic future that lies ahead. A historically diverse city, Baku is positioned between Europe and Asia and has long been home to religious, ethnic and cultural diversity. Today it boasts award–winning architecture by Zaha Hadid, UNESCO world heritage sites and a booming contemporary art scene the panelists will explore.

VIENNA Talks gives the floor to contemporary art professionals. 29 guests from 12 different nations will talk about how different individuals, organisations, and events in the art scene interact – or could interact – with each other. What can visitors learn from art biennials? What about protest culture in contemporary art? These are just a few of the topics that
will be addressed. VIENNA Talks also provides the audience with insights into the contemporary art scenes of select countries in the fair’s focal region. Representatives of the local art communities will impart accurate and up-to-date accounts of the challenges being faced and the different perspectives in their respective countries.
