FREESTYLE: CINEMA FOR SOCIAL CHANGE

16 Oct - 19 Oct 17

The Cinema for Social Change is an international film project that shows documentary films devoted to the social problems of contemporary societies. It is organized by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute (Culture.pl) in cooperation with YARAT Contemporary Art Centre, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Baku, IMAGINE Euro Tolerance Festival and DokuBaku International Documentary Film Festival.

This year edition is dedicated to the topic of the individual freedom, its limits and the ability to understand other people. It covers not only the most important and moving films created by various directors from different countries around the world, but also a series of discussions, Q&As and workshops.

The curator of the whole project is the notable American film expert Professor Richard Peña, a figure well known in the film world as a professor at the department of Film Studies at Columbia University, the program director at the Film Society of the Lincoln Center, and a long-serving director of the New York Film Festival (1988-2012).

  • 19:20-20:10 – Screening of Burning in the Sun, 2010, Cambria Matlow & Morgan Robinson, USA, 82 min.
Of mixed Italian and Malian ancestry, Daniele Dembéle always hoped that upon completing his university studies in Europe he could return to West Africa and get involved with efforts to better social and economic conditions. Yet exactly how? Dembéne came up with what might be called an ingenious if obvious project: to bring solar energy to the remotest parts of his native Mali. Without at first any real budget, he begins amassing broken bits from solar panels found at factories making them, and discovers that they are still perfectly usable; so with the help of some of the local inhabitants, he starts creating the means to electrify the village/ BURNING IN THE SUN is truly inspirational, showing not only the impact one individual can make, but also asking why it is that the poorest, most needy areas of Earth are often the last to benefit from the latest.
