DESCRIBE THE SKY!
CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL FOR AGES 7-12
WITH PARVANA PERSIANI
BAKU - SHAKI - GUBA / MARCH - MAY
Describe the Sky is Azerbaijan’s first Children’s Art Festival for children aged 7-12 and organized as part of Yarat’s ‘Little Yarat‘ education programme. Taking its inspiration from American artist C.G Haymes’ 1970s project ‘Skymail’ in which she asked a number of recipients to ‘describe the sky’ through letters, Yarat Children’s Art Festival invites children from across the country to interpret the sky through contemporary art.
Working closely with visual artist Parvana Persiani children will be guided through a series of workshops with schools in Baku, Shaki and Guba and asked to respond to the theme through a variety of fine art mediums such as drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture/installation. Scientific, art and cultural themes such as the universe, cosmology, astronomy and astrology will function as topics of exploration for the workshops and reflected in the works produced during and after the workshops.
The works produced in this workshop will be featured over a one week period in Baku and will involve an opportunity for children to have their works displayed for the enjoyment of the public. In addition, in Baku children will also take part in educational workshops with some of the country’s leading contemporary artists as well as any visiting guest artists. The project will be showcased at the YARAT Contemporary Art Centre cafe or seek to source outdoor containers on the grass next to Yarat’s centre for the purpose of the temporary biennale.
