24 Mar - 25 Mar 15

CALL TO PARTICIPATE FOR CHILDREN AGES 10-16

WORKSHOP ‘CYRUS CYLINDER’

WITH ALA EBTEKAR

YARAT Contemporary Art Space is delighted to inform you that we are hosting international visual artist Ala Ebtekar (www.torandj.com) an artist and professor at Stanford University, California, USA to conduct a short residency with YARAT. Ala’s residency is part of his preparations towards the summer Public Art Festival later this year in June, where he will orchestrate a multi-media performance exploring sound art and informal architectures. Ala would like to incorporate the future generation of voices within his performance as part of his on-going project Cylindr. US (www.cylindr.us) in which he explores the current and future legacy of the renowned Persian artefact the ‘Cyrus Cylinder’. The Cyrus Cylinder was founded in 1879 in ancient Mesopotamia (now modern day Iraq) and is inscribed with the accomplishments of 6th century (BCE) ruler Cyrus the Great, King of Persia. Historians consider the Cyrus Cylinder to be an important declaration of human rights and with that idea in mind Ala would like to work with local children to record their opinions and aspirations as future generation leaders.

As part of his residency Ala will would like to work with small groups of 10 children daily over 2 days for two hour sessions exploring ideas concerning ancient objects, sound art and futurism. He will then ask each child to answer the following question on camera: ‘if you were king/queen of the universe and wanted to leave behind a message for later generations, what would you want it to say?’ Children’s individual responses will be video recorded and later used by the artist for his final performance in June 2015 serving as an important testimony of voices from children living in Baku.

Ala Ebtekar (born July 21, 1978) is an American-based visual artist who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ebtekar is known primarily for his work in painting, drawing, and installation that explores the juncture between history and myth, forging a multi-faceted project that melds Persian mythology, science, philosophy and pop culture together.
