СOURSE LEADER: Sabina Shikhlinskaya

Sabina Shikhlinskaya is an artist and independent curator. She was a pioneer of contemporary conceptual art formation in Azerbaijan and holds a title of the honored artist of Azerbaijan. Sabina Shikhlinskaya is a member of the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art (CIMAM) and coordinates cultural programs of Goethe-Institut to be implemented in Azerbaijan.

So far she has participated in numerous exhibitions held in national galleries and MOMAs as well as in biennials in Azerbaijan and abroad. Her artworks, namely paintings, graphic art, photos and video installations are widely represented in public and private collections. She has been the curator of more than 60 local and international art projects such as exhibitions, symposiums and presentations here and abroad. She was the curator of first Azerbaijani exhibition pavilion ever at 52 Venice Biennial.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The master classes will include lectures on contemporary art history and conceptual art theories. The classes’ attendants will explore recent trends in curatorial practices through local and international experience-related presentation. The innovative educational performance will underlie the master classes. In course of performance the classes’ attendants will benefit from opportunities of learning exhibition art project design and implementation and, moreover, be able to act as project participants.

For the entire period of the master classes, classes’ attendants are supposed to design two photo exhibition projects in line with art project roles and responsibilities as mediators, curators, coordinators, project managers, art critics, exhibitors, fundraising officers, PR managers and artists. During the second art project design the participants will switch their roles. The participants will partly work on both art projects simultaneously.  

STUDENT’S PROFILE:

The following categories of students are eligible to apply for the master classes:

  • University students and Humanities Department students, doing their degrees or those who have already got their first or master degrees in art and culture.
  • University students who got their first or master degrees in Economics but also have basic art and culture knowledge to successfully attend the master classes.    

The total number of master classes’ attendants should not exceed 15 participants.

SCHEDULE:

The total course will include 12 lectures and 5 to 7 days for elaboration of final exhibition art project presentation. The classes will be delivered three times a week from 19:00 PM to 21:00 PM at special lecture hall. The lectures will be followed by visual demonstrations like art editions and video material display. The lectures will be partly followed by making visits to art galleries and contemporary art exhibitions.

OUTCOME:

As a result of master classes’ attendance, participants will benefit from application of set of curatorial practices. The master classes will also result in presentation of two publicly accessible photo exhibition projects.
