JAHANGIR SELIMKHANOV MASTER CLASS

12 May 14

A progress review of the master class by famous music historian and art manager Jahangir Selimkhanov will take place at YAY Gallery on 12th May 2014. The master class programme was organised by the non-profit organisation YARAT and has became a unique intellectual laboratory for young writers, artists, designers and photographers.

The main theme of the master class was a mechanism for incorporating creativity on a personal, group and collective level. All theories and methodologies applied within the scope of the course were directed at discovering the hidden creative talents of the participants. The goal of each participant was to produce a concept for a creative work (or event, innovative social application or commercial product) as part of completing their course work.

The YARAT educational programme includes lectures, seminars and monthly master classes by famous artists, photographers, curators and art critics. All master classes and seminars within the YARAT Education framework are free of charge.

In the period 2012 to 2014 in Baku, a series of lectures and master classes were given by esteemed guests from the Moscow National Centre for Contemporary Arts (NCCA), Vitaly Patsyukov and Aleksandr Obukhov, the founder of the Tbilisi Centre of Contemporary Art, Vato Tsereteli, Dean of Central Saint Martins in London, Mark Dunhill, and head of the Faculty of Sculpture at the Royal College of Fine Arts in London, Jordan Baseman.

Knowledge and advice were also shared by the artist Taus Makhacheva and by British theatrical producer Tim Supple who works closely with the Royal London National Theatre. All participants in last year’s Public Art Festival held meetings with the viewers.

Before the end of 2014 master classes are planned by curator Sara Raza, artist Mahmoud Bakhshi, photographers Mervyn Arthur and Rosella Emmanuel, as well as by Professor Birgitta Hosea of the University of the Arts, London, who specialises in animation and video art.

About Jahangir Selimkhanov

A music historian by education, with a proven record of dozens of projects embracing various art forms and segments from the sphere of culture – from combining two traditional musical cultures in a constantly regenerated concert programme first presented in India, to restaging ballet performances in a natural landscape with primitive rock drawings, from a series of public/community art productions for cultural centres in the Baku suburbs involving five artists from northern European countries to a festival dedicated to the theme of gender in theatre, Jahangir Selimkhanov has earned a reputation amongst his colleagues as an 'ideas man', a person able to inspire and animate others with creative thoughts, or simply just point to an emerging trend or hidden possibility.

Premiere: 12 May, 2014 at 19:00

Location: YAY Gallery, Kichik Gala str., 5.

Admission: Free

The presentation will be given in Azerbaijani with simultaneous interpretation into Russian.
