YARAT FILM CLUB presents Sergey Pikalov’s film The Last One:

08 Sep 15

The Last One / 2014 / Azerbaijan, Russia / 15 min / Drama / Colour

YARAT Contemporary Art Centre is delighted to invite you to the screening of an award-winning short feature film “The Last One” directed by Sergey Pikalov. For the first time in the history of the Cannes Film Festival Russia and Azerbaijan took part in the competition programme with their co-produced short film.

The short film «Sonuncu» («The last one») is an original Azerbaijani-Russian project (“Buta films” company and “Azerbaijanfilm»), and one of the 9 movies, selected by the 67th Cannes Film Festival Committee for the competition in the official programme. This year, the Selection Committee received 3450 short films, representing 128 countries.

«Sonuncu» («The last one») is a short feature film about the last living World War II veteran. The old man outlived everyone. His friends, wife, children. But he wasn't lonely. An old fridge buzzed hoarsely in the corridor, and – substituted for friends and family. The old man didn’t remember when he last left the house. There was no need for it. A neighbour boy brought the products, and there wasn’t anything else needed. The old man stuck to the principle: “Live each day as if it was your last”. Every evening he lay down to die. Waking up the next morning he shambled to the fridge. It wasn’t an easy companion. It would husk and jump, and then break off abruptly. It annoyed the old man. He couldn’t predict the mood of his only friend. Every day he would sit down opposite the fridge and write: “8.00 – turned on; 9.15 – turned off; 9.47 – turned on…”. Thus he hoped to comprehend the consistent pattern, in accordance to which his friend lived. That day started as usual. The old man woke up alive and headed to the porch. The fridge was in particular nasty. The old man got angry and switched on TV – for the first time in years. It changed his life forever…

Awards: At London City Film Festival the film «Sonuncu» was awarded with the audience prize, it was awarded Best Film at Izmir International Film Festival and won the Young Jury Prize at French international short film festival COURTS DEVANT. At the Sao Paolo International Film Festival the film was awarded with SESc TV Award for Best Debut 2014.

"SONUNCU" also participated in: 20-Palm Springs International Short Film Festival, 36-Moscow International Film Festival, Kinotavr, Big Sur International Short film Screening Series, Film Festival Della Lessinnia, Aye-Aye Film Festival Nancy Lorraine, Voices 2014, Koroche, Sarajevo Film Festival, Batumi International Art-House Film Festival, Athens International Film Festival, Bridge Film Fest Kosovo, SHNIT Film Festival, International Short Film Festival Cyprus, Asiana International Short Film Festival, Trieste Film Festival, Polish Film Festival Zubroffka,  Singapore International Film Festival  - this is only a short list of the festivals in which the film is participating and will be participating.

Sergey Pikalov, director. Graduated from the Yaroslavl State Theatre Institute. Is well-known for the series «Better be born beautiful», starring Nelly Uvarova. Director for the feature film «Frump» with Vladimir Vdovichenkov and «Captain's Ryumin Personnel File» series. Has recently finished work on the project for Channel One Russia, «Second Breath» series, starring Marat Basharov and Victoria Tolstoganova.

Sergey Pikalov: «This movie is made by people; where they come from is a question of secondary importance. No one on the set thought we shoot Russian or Azerbaijani cinema. We speak the same language – the language of cinema. Movie-making is a collective labour, everyone brings something different. So personally, I do not fully understand the term «auteur cinema». But if we call our film «auteur», then everyone who worked on it is its author. If you take one piece out of the car, it may still function, but will not be whole, and it's highly unlikely the car will get to the end of the trip».

The film will be shown in Azeri
