10 May 16

YARAT Contemporary Art Centre is delighted to invite you to the screening of 'Nabat', a film written and directed by Elchin Musaoglu. The screening will be organized as a part of YARAT Film Club which aims to become an informal meeting point for the viewing and discussion of contemporary art videos and films.

Nabat / 2014 / Azerbaijan / 104 min / Fiction / Colour

Director: Elchin Musaoglu

Cast: Fatemeh Motamed Arya, Vidadi Aliyev, Sabir Mammadov, Farhad Israfilov

The main characters of the film are the elderly people, trying to survive in a small mountain village.

The husband is a forester, bedridden after the news of his son's death in the war. His wife is his only connection with the world. Forester now sees the village that was bombed and abandoned by villagers through her eyes. Somewhere in the vicinity, wanders a she-wolf, which also cannot leave the village, abandoning her cubs.

The wife goes door to door in the empty village and lights the lamps in the windows. She sacredly believes: if there is no light in the house - it is a dead house, and, hence, bringing light into the house, she gives hope, that one day, life will return to these lands, and there will be peace.

LET’S CEE Curator Tomasz Raczek:
«The film NABAT shows the fate of a poor peasant woman against the background of the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the beginning of the 1990s. But at the same time, it is a universal parable of all mothers during times of war. What seems to be set as a rational village chronicle by director Elchin Musaoglu soon turns out to be interfused with poetical dream images and nature symbolism, impressively visualising Nabat’s inner and outer world. It is the depressingly beautiful melancholia that distinguishes this film, derived from the exceptional play of the Iranian actress Fatemeh Motamed Arya».
