FILM CLUB: FILM VERSION oF SARAH FRANKCOM'S HAMLET

16 May 16

The British Council has supported the production of a film version of Sarah Frankcom’s critically acclaimed stage production of Hamlet, which recently enjoyed a sell-out run at the Manchester Royal Exchange in 2014.

Maxine Peake as Hamlet was released in nearly 300 UK cinemas on 23 March 2015. Hamlet is brought to the screen by the team behind the acclaimed Peter Grimes on Aldeburgh Beach which was shown in UK cinemas in 2013, and was part of the British Council’s ‘Britten on Film’ international tour. The British Council screen this film internationally in non-English speaking countries across 2016 as part of the British Council’s Shakespeare on Film touring collection programme. The programme includes the earliest surviving silent Shakespeare, faithful adaptations by British actor/directors who have had made Shakespeare’s work accessible internationally (such as Olivier and Branagh); performances by today’s greatest Shakespearean actors including Judi Dench (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Ian McKellen (Richard III); experimental and playful reworkings that reinforce Shakespeare’s enduring relevance as source material (Prospero’s Books, Theatre of Blood and Next) and expressions of themes such as diversity, identity and desire (Othello, Romeo and Juliet and The Angelic Conversation).

The first films shown in Baku was King Lear (Baku State University 29 February) and Much Ado About Nothing (Yarat 15 March) with more to come throughout the year.

The film will be shown in English
