LECTURE BY ANDREY LOGUTOV: CITY VOICES: SONIC A

07 Dec 16

YARAT Contemporary Art Space invited to attend a lecture by Andrey Logutov, the Associate Professor at Moscow State University, Russia

In the words of Marshall McLuhan and Edmund Carpenter, “Auditory space has no point of favored focus. It's a sphere without fixed boundaries, space made by the thing itself, not space containing the thing. It is not pictorial space, bowed in, but dynamic, always in flux, creating its own dimensions moment by moment.” (Explorations in Communications, 1960) Virtually the same may be said of the modern urban space as it is also dynamic, does not have a definite circumference and is recreated through everyday practices.

Since the first Sony Walkman was produced in 1979, listening has become a private activity. The city remains one of the few spaces where listening is still done collectively. However, it was not until a few decades ago that people started paying close attention to how the city sounds instead of concentrating solely on how it looks.

The talk will touch on the urban sound ecology, the ways urban sound is conceptualized scientifically, possible futures of modern sonic landscapes and artificial sonic ambiences.
