FILM CLUB: ALIKHAN ERJANOV'S DRAMA THE OWNERS

11 Jul 17

YARAT Contemporary Art Space is a retrospective of Kazakh films dedicated to our current Suns and Neons above Kazakhstan exhibition, which will continue until October 2017. Film Club will be showing The Owners (2014), a feature by a young director Ailkhan Erjanov and previously screening at the 67th International Film Festival in Cannes.

The Owners / 2014 / Kazakhstan / 110 min / Drama / Colour

Three orphaned kids—eldest brother John, who has done time for petty crime; Yerbol, the handsome, idealistic middle brother; and Aliya, the kid sister with an illness that remains unspecified until the final reel—come back to their late mother’s village to live in her old house. Only problem is, the police chief’s family has been squatting in the empty place, and these city kids’ claim means next to nothing in drunken village.

Adilkhan Yerzhanov was born in 1982 in the Jezkazgan region of Kazakhstan. In 2009, he finished his studies in film directing at the Kazakhstan National Academy of Arts, and was then able to continue his training in New York thanks to a bursary. In 1999, he received accolades for the first Kazakh animation series KOZY-KORPESH AND BAYAN-SULU. He made several shorts and features, among which THE OWNERS (2014), which premiered at Cannes and was subsequently screened and awarded at many film festivals all over the world. His new film, THE PLAGUE AT THE KARATAS VILLAGE (2016), had its world premiere at IFF Rotterdam.

Film will be shown in Kazakhi language with English subtitles.
