YARAT RESIDENCY: SOLO EXHIBITION INESCAPABLE DROUGHTS BY ISHAI SHAPIRA KALTER (ISRAEL)

02 Jun - 11 Jun 16

YARAT Contemporary Art Space presents Ishai Shapira Kalter's solo exhibition Inescapable Droughts at YARAT Studios as results YARAT Residency programm. In recent years, Shapira Kalter’s projects focused on issues affecting contemporary art’s role within the societies it operates.

For this exhibition Ishai Shapira Kalter sent an open letter to Suhail Malik, willing to artistically elaborate Malik’s argument “on the necessity of art’s exit from contemporary art”. Slightly different from Malik’s approach and rather separated from the artist he is, Shapira Kalter chooses to base an agenda out of his own personal experience as an art observer who paced New York’s art galleries through the last year or so. His immediate reaction to the art his eyes absorbed is related to the paradoxical message driven from the constant failure of art to represent authentic attitudes of here and now conditions.

As a result of this experience, Shapira Kalter hoped to reach out faraway art practitioners, not as a pilgrim of aesthetic theories, neither as an art activist who wishes to explore ideologies of so called utopic victories, but rather as voyager aspiring to arrive in a minute late to a foreign place that is not yet fully contaminated by contemporary art.

From corn fields to a protected potatoes national park, through a desire to park an old Lada car by a brand new Whole Foods branch, fetishizing agriculture, remembering some great escape, Inescapable Droughts is a sculptural agglomeration set to give formal expression to the inorganic roles the art observers we are, wishing to organically perform.

The exhibition will open from 2 June til 11th June.
