ARTIM LAB: 100% MADE IN AZERBAIJAN

04 Apr 17

YARAT Contemporary Art Space is pleased to invite you to the 24 hours group exhibition of ARTIM LAB “100% Made in Azerbaijan” at ARTIM PROJECT Space.

“While working on one of the projects, I realized that most of the materials that I use are not produced in Azerbaijan. I was wondering whether it would be possible to prepare an exhibition consisting of artworks made only from local goods. Especially in times of economical crisis the motto “If everybody buys local goods, the profits stays home” is very relevant. An increase of the prices for artistic supplies in the local market, should not interfere with the artistic creativity, but rather call the search for uniqueness and inspire experimental practices.

A careful approach and the awareness of the material's geopolitical background can turn into the artist’s trademark. Many contemporary artists became famous because of their choice of local products. The combination of mass production and traditional craftsmanship was pioneered by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei with his non-traditional use of Chinese traditional material. The project “100% Made in Azerbaijan” features the results of unique and familiar medias of self-expression, however, presented in another context.” - Farhad Farzaliyev.

ARTIM LAB participants Hatem Alizadeh, Leyla Guliyeva, Shahnaz Aghayeva, Aydan Mirzeyeva, Ilaye Xaliqova, Chinara Valiyeva, Atesh Azizov, Amil Guliyev, Etibar Ismayilov, Aqil Tahirli and Mousa Beyzadeh. The show features the results of a three weeks workshop conducted by the artist Farhad Farzaliyev.
In the workshop the participants discussed topics of globalization, ecological and ethnical questions discovering local materials and their symbolical, sociological and political meaning.

The exhibition shows works that are exclusively made from local materials thus pushed the artists to return to simplicity and to focus on the physicality of everyday objects. In a commercialized world the exhibition touches on societal sensibilities on the real and natural unveiling how much our surrounding is dominated by imported goods.
