There are some days that, like a gust of wind, will suddenly upend your entire life – for better or worse.
Mustang, directed by Turkish director Deniz Gamze Ergüven, has been described as the ‘Virgin Suicides in Anatolia’. The film is set in rural south-eastern Turkey and tells the story of five sisters who are raised by their conservative grandmother and uncle, who together are intent on marrying them off and protecting their honour. Provoked by the girls frolicking on the beach, the story unfold to bring up issues of family honour, forced marriages and the demonization of female sexuality in Turkey - striking a chord too with problems faced by young Azerbaijanis. The film will be followed by a short discussion with local experts on these issues to discuss some of the questions raised by the film.
The film will be shown in Turkish with English Subtitles.
